Great Review of Elmes Acupuncture on Google Map!

"Had my first acupuncture experience with Ursula and honestly say i'll be back for more, very relaxing, Ursula really makes you feel at ease and explains whats she's doing thoroughly, didn't try to oversell any treatment the way some places would try to recommend a course of treatments, I tried the cosmetic acupuncture and while I don't have lines I did feel I looked tired a lot and i'm bright eyed today and very happy indeed. already booked my next appointment and if I could give the review more the then 5 stars I would :-)"

DIY Natural Body Scrub Tutorial

This incredibly simple body scrub is so easy to make in just 3 steps and is the most effective scrub I 've every used!

Tip: Rub the scrub thoroughly onto dry skin and then rinse off in the shower.

You will need:

Brown Sugar
White Sugar
Sweet Almond Oil
Orange Essential Oil (or the essential oil of your choice)

Step 1. Put 1 x cup of Brown Sugar and 1 x cup of White Sugar into a bowl

Step 2. Add enough Sweet Almond Oil until it starts to look like a paste

Step 3. Add 10 drops of Orange Essential Oil, or other oils like Lavender, Rosemary, Geranium, whichever is your favorite!

Make sure you use pure essential oils, you can find these in you local health shop.  Don't use fragrance oils as these will irritate your skin and don't squeeze fresh juice into your mixture as this will make your scrub go rancid very quickly.
Put the scrub in a nice jar and give it as a gift!

9000 Needles

I just watched this award winning Documentary 9000 Needles and I highly recommend it to all acupuncturist or anyone interesting in watching a movie about acupuncture, love and determination.  The documentary is about Devin Dearth, a forty year old successful businessman and champion body builder who suffers a devastating stroke. The stroke leave Devin with paralysis, double vision and difficulty speaking. After spending time in ICU, he is transferred to in-patient rehabilitation, but to the limitations of the US health insurance system, his treatment is cut short.  With no other choice, the family decide to bring Devin to a TCM Hospital Tianjian, China where he receives a three month rehabilitation programme with progressive results.

In the documentary, we see Devin receiving quite intense Acupuncture treatments daily.  The use of points we rarely use in day to day practice such as Renzhong Du 26 with very strong stimulation and needling directly into his tongue.  He also received daily Physiotherapy treatment and herbal medicine.

This documentary is heartbreaking, it will make you cry, but Devin's determination is inspiring and the loving support he received from his family and community all contribute to his rehabilitation.

When I studied in China, I spent time on a Stroke ward in Beijing Hepingli Hospital and witnessed at first hand how effective an integrated approach of western medicine, physiotherapy, Traditional Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture is for a progressive recovery after such a debilitating illness.  In China, after the patient has spent a week in ICU, they begin their rehabilitation with acupuncture in the morning and physiotherapy in the afternoon.  The key is to start the acupuncture treatments as early as possible after the stroke for the most effective recovery.

Study finds Hair Stimulation Following Laser and IPL - Intense Pulse Light Treatments

A study published in "Lasers in Surgery and Medicine"2007, carried out by Oregon Health & Science University on *the effects of hair stimulation following Laser and IPL treatments, concluded that 10.49% of the 543 patients treated suffered an increase of hair growth in the area that was treated by the laser and the area bordering the treated area. Also the hair appeared thicker and darker then the hair initially treated.  An additional 8.10% of patients demonstrated no apparent reduction of hair and only 2.5% were discharge with near completion of hair reduction.

I have found this to be true in my Electrolysis clinic.  Many clients have had many Laser treatments and are not getting the permeant results they desire and some see very little hair reduction or burns on their skin, while others have an increase in hair growth.  Electrolysis is still the only method of permanent hair removal that is scientifically proven.  Viewed as "old fashioned" and an out dated treatment in recent years, I'm finding many people are now returning to Electrolysis for a permeant result.

Study: Acupuncture Helps PCOS Patients

Study: Acupuncture Helps PCOS Patients

PCOS, Hirsutism and Electrolysis

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, (PCOS), and other chronic endocrine disorders frequently cause hirsutism, or excessive hair growth in females. While certain medications, (spironolactone, Vaniqua) can slow the future growth, existing hair must be treated by electrolysis.
If you suffer from a hormonal inbalance, you know that the excess hair growth is often one of the most difficult  and frustrating aspects to treat and manage. With truly caring and expert hands we can help you with this condition  by providing an effective method of hair removal as well as Acupuncture which studies show, can help improve the other hormonal symptoms of PCOS such as weight, testosterone levels and menstrual irregularities.

Acupuncture for Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal - New Study

http://www.healthcmi.com/acupuncturist-news-online/705-acupuncturedrugalcoho-withdrawal

NADA: The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association

Development of the NADA protocol
The use of acupuncture for the treatment of drug and alcohol dependency is a recent development in the history of this ancient art. For centuries, Asian cultures have placed needles in precise locations on the body to relieve pain and treat disease. Only since 1972, when a Hong Kong neurosurgeon, H.L Wen M.D., discovered that acupuncture could alleviate the symptoms of drug withdrawal, has this method been used for detoxification and relapse prevention.

The Lincoln Memorial Hospital
In the USA, the NADA protocol was first introduced on an outpatient basis in 1974 at the Lincoln Memorial Hospital, a city facility in the South Bronx area of New York City.  By the mid 1980’s the success of this unique procedure had become so evident that treatment facilities across the USA began incorporating acupuncture into their treatment programs.

NADA: The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, USA
In 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was established to promote education and training of clinicians in the use of the NADA protocol through the NADA five-point ear acupuncture protocol.

In 1987, Bullock, Culliton and Olander published research on its effectiveness in treating people with chronic drug dependency problems. Acupuncture detoxification evolved rapidly and is now used effectively for acute and prolonged withdrawal as well as relapse prevention.  Yale University, school of internal medicine, published a research report in the August 2000 (Archives of Internal Medicine) that showed the effectiveness of the NADA protocol in the treatment of cocaine, heroin and methadone addiction.

Chinese lunar New Year-A Second Chance to get your New Year's Resolutions Right!

It's about a month into the New Year. Do you already wish you had a do-over for your New Year's Resolutions?

If so, you're in luck. You do.

February 10th is the Chinese lunar New Year. The celebration of the New Year, the Spring Festival, is China's longest and most important holiday. Because it is based on a different calendar, it falls on a different date between January 21 and February 20 every year.

You can think of Spring Festival as Christmas and New Year all rolled into one. Just like our holiday season, it's a time of celebration, visiting family and friends, giving gifts and preparing for the next year.

Chinese Lunar New Year: Spring Festival
In China, there are many New Year's traditions during the 15-day Spring Festival. Many people clean their homes to sweep away the past year and usher in the next. Oftentimes family members travel home for a visit.

Children receive red envelopes, called hóngbo in Mandarin, filled with money from their relatives.

People hang red lanterns outside their homes to bring happiness and good luck. On Chinese New Year's Eve families gather for a huge meal and enjoy "lucky" foods together. And, of course, there are fireworks.

The Chinese zodiac has 12 years in its cycle, each one represented by an animal; 2013 is the Year of the Snake. Astrologers say that people born in the Year of the Snake are wise but enigmatic. They are very intuitive and size up situations well, but say little.

Snakes are refined; they like to dress well and are usually financially secure. They are intense and passionate in relationships, but can become jealous and suspicious. Snakes prefer a calm, stress-free environment.

Recommit to Your New Year's Resolutions
The Chinese do not traditionally make New Year's Resolutions like we do in the west, however this is a good time to reflect on the goals you set a month ago. Are you keeping your New Year's resolutions?

If you're having trouble, maybe it's time to take a lesson from the Snakes. Take a quiet moment and reflect on what is stopping you. Do you need to get serious? Do you need additional support? Are your goals genuine - do you want to do them or do you think you should do them? Why haven't you kept your New Year's Resolutions?

If your resolutions include improving your health in 2013, I can help you with that. Give me a call and we can arrange an appointment for anything from a tune-up to weight control to mood balancing.

If you need to make a deeper commitment to your resolutions, take a moment and think about what you need to do to keep them. Write down 3 easy action steps.

...and do them. Now.

Use the Chinese lunar New Year as a do-over. Commit to your New Year's resolutions.

Gong Xi Fa Cái. Happy New Year.

Latest Acupuncture Research: Acupuncture and a Gluten-Free Diet Relieve Urticaria and Eczema in a Case of Undiagnosed Dermatitis Herpetiformis

The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of acupuncture and a gluten-free diet (GFD) for urticaria and severe eczema in a patient with undiagnosed dermatitis herpetiformis and atypical or extraintestinal celiac disease.

CLINICAL FEATURES: A 48-year-old woman presented with intense urticaria, eczema, worsening heartburn, chronic constipation, headaches, and an intense feeling of heat for 4 months. Results of punch biopsies of the skin lesions and laboratory tests were inconclusive. After the acupuncture sessions reported here ended, human leukocyte antigen blood typing revealed celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis-associated human leukocyte antigen DQ-8. Results of an endoscopy and colonoscopy were negative.

INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: The patient received 3 acupuncture treatments a week for 12 weeks. The patient’s symptoms began in March 2008. She began using topical and oral steroids and felt that her symptoms were not responding. Acupuncture began in July 2008. At the end of the first 12 treatments, during which she was using topical and oral steroids, the urticaria and constipation resolved completely; and she had temporary relief from the heartburn. It is thought that the urticaria and constipation resolved because of the acupuncture as that was the only change. At the end of the second 12 treatments, during which time she had started Optifast, a GFD, the heartburn, headache, and eczema resolved. At the end of the third 12 treatments, all her symptoms remained resolved. Steroid treatment was discontinued after the first 12 treatments.

CONCLUSION:Acupuncture and diet changes appeared to provide relief from the urticaria and eczema of dermatitis herpetiformis beyond that obtained by traditional treatment of a GFD alone.

Acupuncture does work as it stimulates a natural pain killer, scientists find

Acupuncture works by stimulating a natural painkiller in the body that swells arteries and allows more blood to flow through, scientists have discovered.
The identification of the chemical adenosine as a central player could also make the ancient Chinese therapy even more effective at relieving pain.
Scientists were able to triple the beneficial effects of simply sticking needles in mice by adding a leukaemia medication that increased their amounts of the molecule.
Dr Maiken Nedergaard, a neuroscientist at the University of Rochester, New York, said: “Acupuncture has been a mainstay of medical treatment in certain parts of the world for 4,000 years, but because it has not been understood completely, many people have remained sceptical.
“In this work, we provide information about one physical mechanism through which acupuncture reduces pain in the body.
“What we found is that adenosine, a natural pain killer, is released during acupuncture and that adenosine may be the primary way acupuncture reduces pain.
